“Since ancient times,” Paramahansa Yogananda has explained, “India has prescribed a real art of living for the complete and balanced development of every human being.”

Despite the hectic and restless nature of our modern times — or maybe especially because of this! — yoga’s emphasis on organizing your life to bring greater balance in body, mind, and soul is more relevant than ever for those seeking happiness and meaning.

Is it possible to find equilibrium and the right relationship between your various duties and responsibilities?

Paramahansaji says yes it is possible to do so, and avoid one-sidedness — when you make the simply stated but profoundly effective decision to schedule your life, understanding how to prioritize in a way that not only promises but increasingly delivers all-round success.

We hope the following wisdom from Paramahansa Yogananda will be a resource for you to achieve a greater sense of balance.

From the talks and writings of Paramahansa Yogananda:

Balance material and spiritual duties in your life; that will bring you supreme happiness.

You must think of greater and lesser duties in proper perspective. And don’t let one duty contradict another. In the Sanskrit scriptures there is a divine law, one of the most beautiful laws ever given to the world: “If one duty contradicts another duty, it is not a true duty.”

Most persons, in pursuit of health and wealth, forget their duty to God and their soul. This is the greatest ignorance of all, because no duty can be performed without the power borrowed from God. Let the secretary of your true judgment arrange the daily routine of your life. Systematize and schedule your engagements.

All men and women should remember that their worldly life can be freed from endless physical and mental ills if they add deep meditation to their daily routine of living.

Spiritual consciousness is a perfect internal expression of truth that manifests as a balanced, harmonious life, giving you true happiness, which you in turn share with others.

The message of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita stands as the doctrine best suited to our modern busy life of many worries. To work without the peace of God is hades. To work with God’s happiness ever bubbling in the soul is to carry a portable paradise within you wherever you go.

Practice the art of living in this world without losing your inner peace of mind. Follow the path of balance to reach the inner wondrous garden of Self-realization.

To dive into more wisdom on the way yoga teaches you to live a balanced and harmonious life, in another blog post you can read an excerpt from Paramahansa Yogananda’s Journey to Self-realization.
