February 27, 2025: SRF Lake Shrine Reopening Update
The SRF Lake Shrine Meditation Gardens, Temple, and Retreat remain closed to the public due to ongoing recovery work following the Palisades fire.
We want to let you know that many of the fire evacuees in the Lake Shrine Temple community are now beginning to move forward with rebuilding their lives. And we are deeply thankful to the SRF Lake Shrine Volunteer Support Team for their assistance with this effort.
It is still too early to forecast when the reopening of Lake Shrine will take place, but as soon as we have an inspection report and a remediation plan, preparing a timeline will be possible.

Although we do not yet have an estimate about when we can reopen our beloved SRF Lake Shrine, we want to inform you that we are actively engaged in taking steps for reopening as soon as it is safe and practical to do so. There are still many details to be worked out regarding the protocols for testing, cleaning, and other required procedures for the grounds and the many structures on our site and those in the neighboring areas. We want to ensure that our site will be certified safe for visitors before we reopen. At this time, the Lake Shrine Temple, Retreat, and Meditation Gardens remain closed to all visitors. We will keep you informed as we get more clarity about the situation in the coming weeks.

As mentioned below, Brother Chidananda, president and spiritual head of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, will be speaking via livestream about this ongoing situation with the SRF Lake Shrine and Los Angeles fires. That livestream will take place this Sunday, January 12, at 4:00 p.m. (PST). You can view the livestream on a different post on the SRF blog or on the SRF YouTube channel. And the video of Brother Chidananda's message will be at both of those locations after the event for those unable to view during the livestream.
January 9, 2025 — 6:30 p.m.
After gathering additional information this afternoon, we are now able to provide a more in-depth update about Paramahansa Yogananda’s beloved SRF Lake Shrine.

Legacy Structures Around the Lake
We are heartened to be able to confirm that all of the legacy structures around the perimeter of the Lake (which we reported on earlier today) are indeed intact. In addition, we now have confirmation that the Lake Shrine Temple and Retreat buildings are completely undamaged.
With regard to the meditation gardens surrounding the Lake, there has been no major loss to the beautiful landscaping. One large tree has been lost, but otherwise only minor damage to some small vegetation was sustained. And we can happily report that the swans and fish that reside at the lake are safe as well.
The small Visitor Restroom facility situated across the path from the Museum was taken by the fire. But the Museum itself — housing many artifacts from Paramahansa Yogananda’s life — is unharmed.
Monks’ Ashram
Concerning the ashram facilities for the monks who reside at the Lake Shrine, the main Monks’ Ashram — a four-story building constructed in the mid-1990s and located on Sunset Blvd. — remains completely intact with only one window damaged.
Unfortunately, the older, nearby buildings where some of the monks were housed (the former Santa Ynez Inn complex) has been destroyed by the fire. Additionally, the portion of the Santa Ynez complex that had been leased by SRF to the Westside Waldorf School has been severely damaged.
Other Details
One shed that was used to store gardening equipment, positioned at the far end of the public parking lot, is gone. A large dump truck used by the Lake Shrine gardeners was also destroyed.
Tragically, the large commercial apartment building (not owned by SRF) adjacent to our parking lot was completely destroyed. We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the people whose homes were lost at this location and in all the many other areas of Pacific Palisades — and greater Los Angeles — where such tremendous destruction by the wildfires has taken place.
Of course, we are very much aware that the wildfires are not yet contained. We are deeply thankful for what we were able to discover about the situation at the Lake Shrine today, yet we know that ongoing prayers are needed, including for all who may be in harm’s way.
We know that the many thousands of you around the world who have been following this situation will share our profound gratitude to God and our Gurus for preserving this sacred site. And again, we would like to extend our deepest appreciation for the invaluable and valiant efforts of those firefighters who protected the Lake Shrine, and the continuing efforts of the firefighters who are battling to save the properties and livelihoods of so many.

We wanted to provide another update about the situation at the SRF Lake Shrine due to the wildfire in Pacific Palisades.
All of the legacy buildings around the perimeter of the Lake continue to be safe — the Windmill Chapel, Houseboat, Golden Lotus Towers and Gandhi World Peace Memorial, Museum Building, Visitor Center — due to the heroic firefighting efforts that have taken place over the past few days.
The information that we have at present also indicates that the Temple and Retreat buildings on the hilltop above the Lake were undamaged. The status of other facilities on the premises, including the Monks’ Ashram buildings, is not known as of this writing. As already reported, all monastics and staff were safely evacuated two days ago.
We are deeply grateful to those who have been able to assist in this crucial effort, and to the divine blessings and protection of God and our Gurus.
With most of Pacific Palisades having endured catastrophic destruction, our prayers and goodwill reach out to all our neighbors in the Pacific Palisades community who were affected. As this is still very much an evolving situation, we will provide more information as we are able.
Thank you to everyone around the world who has been praying deeply for the safety of this beloved pilgrimage site, as well as for the well-being of the firefighters and all those affected by these unprecedented fires in Los Angeles.
We are hoping to have a more in-depth assessment of the entire Lake Shrine property at some point soon, and will continue to post here with updated information as soon as that is available.
The Lake Shrine Temple, Retreat, and grounds will continue to be closed until further notice, and the events previously scheduled at the Temple for this weekend have been cancelled.

We wanted to provide you an update on the SRF Lake Shrine as many of you have been praying and expressing concern for the safety of this sacred pilgrimage site.
The entire area of Pacific Palisades is still considered unsafe due to the many fires, and it has been challenging to get accurate information about the Lake Shrine. At this time, we are happy to let you know that all of the legacy buildings around the lake perimeter — Windmill Chapel, Houseboat, Golden Lotus Towers, Museum Building, Visitor Center — are safe. Let us keep praying that they continue to be protected.
At this time, due to the heavy smoke and poor visibility in the area, we are unable to confirm the status of the monks’ ashram (located separate from the main Lake grounds, further down Sunset Blvd. from the Lake and Temple). As mentioned in yesterday’s post, all the monks and staff at the Lake Shrine were safely evacuated and sheltered in other ashrams and locations away from the fire.
The International Headquarters on Mt. Washington continues to be safe and well away from the active fire zones.
We will continue to update this blog when we have more information.

We deeply appreciate the prayers and outpouring of support that we have received from all over the world.
Thank you everyone for your kind wishes and prayers. We are monitoring the situation carefully, and ask that you continue to pray for the well-being and safety of the firefighters, first responders, and everyone affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles.
We do not yet have an update to share about the status of the SRF Lake Shrine, but we will provide news here when we know more.
Please be aware that the SRF International Headquarters in Los Angeles is safe, as are all the monastics and staff members who serve at the Mother Center. The grounds of the headquarters are closed until further notice.

As you may have seen in the news, a significant wildfire broke out today in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, close to the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine. All visitors, staff, and monastics have been safely evacuated from the property. And the SRF Lake Shrine will be closed to visitors until further notice.
We are grateful to the fire fighters and other emergency services for helping to manage this situation, and remaining actively stationed around the perimeter of our Lake Shrine grounds.
Please join us in praying for our Gurudeva Paramahansa Yogananda’s beloved Lake Shrine, for our Pacific Palisades neighbors, and for everyone affected by the fire. We deeply appreciate your prayers and support during this challenging time.

Honestly I felt conflicted about being thankful that the Lake Shrine was miraculously spared while the whole neighborhood around it was devastated. Brother Chidananda’s great example of reaching out and inviting the firefighters, other congregations, and the whole community into the sanctuary is such a wonderful response.

In July 2014, as a new devotee coming from South Africa to receive Kriya Initiation, my first “port of call” was Lake Shrine. Walking, meditating and contemplating in the grounds of the Lake Shrine was a totally overwhelming experience! The inner peace I felt at Lake Shrine is still in my heart.
Your talk today was a reminder to carry Lake Shrine in our hearts - always. It is the essence of our blessed Guru’s teaching.

I am so happy to hear about Lake Shrine, I have been going there for over 35 years, such a blessing. I am wondering about the Pasadena temple and Hollywood temple, are these ok? Sending heartfelt prayers of love and healing for all those affected by these fires, and great gratitude for all the firefighters and others bravely supporting everyone in this time of need.
My heart is overwhelmed with emotion & gratitude. The Blessed Lake Shrine has been protected by Master and the gurus. Lake Shrine was my sanctuary for over 20 years. A little oasis I could retreat to from a huge surrounding busy city.
My meditation room is circled with calendar pictures of the Lake Shine I daily reflect on.

I’m crying as I write this. Just saw on KTLA News that a reporter showed footage of SRF Lake Shrine survived the fire with minor damage and happily reported that the swans are ok. She has had a lot of people ask her to report on SRF so I was happy to see this news! I know it’s not over yet and we still need prayers but goodness this news was so good to hear tonight!

I was at Lake Shrine on 12/29/2024. I am really shocked and saddened to hear about the wildfire in the Pallisade/Malibu area and deeply concerned about the wellbeing and safety of all the monks and the Shrine itself.

And just last night I read Master's "The Universe is God's Dream" in Man's Eternal Quest. This morning I tangibly feel the powerful oceanic tidal wave of good will being sent to LA. Cal Fire has a really good online interactive map of the fire. As of an hour ago, the Shrine is still protected. Look for Palisades Dr. and scroll around till it dead ends into Sunset Blvd. You should see the body of water...San Ynez. So far, so good. Prayers to all.

I remember when a huge fire *(I think it was 1990?) was approaching the Lake Shrine in the Palisades, I could watch it from across the bay as I lived on the water in Redondo Beach at the time and watched the red fire line as it traveled towards the Lake.
It was horrifying as it just kept coming, you could see it on the move. Then, a miracle happened! The fire abruptly
took a left turn and traveled eastward when it was right across from the Lake Shrine. The fire just turned! So, this is not the first time the Lake Shrine was saved by God. Prayers work! God bless SRF.

I am holding a vision of gentle, cooling rains over the Lake Shrine, its surrounding environs and all people/property that it may bless and protect this Spiritual Lighthouse, as it sends its liberating rays to our world and cosmos. I remember the passage in Master's autobiography where Swami Sri Yukteswar asked Master to lead a religious procession while in Puri. Master asked: "How can I take the barefooted students over the fiery sands"? Yukteswar replied: "I will tell you a secret: the Lord shall send an umbrella of clouds."
Thank you for this beautiful visualization and passage from the Autobiografie. May we all hold on to it and find divine protection in this time of difficulty. It's impossible to believe that Master will not protect our beloved Lake Shrine. But, we don't always understand why things happen. My deepest prayers go out to God and gurus asking for them to protect what was a place of great joy when I grew up in LA and remains a most important place for me. I was thinking about Lake Shrine when I heard the news of fire in Pacific Palisades. Glad that everyone at the Shrine has been evacuated and are safe. I hope the shrine is safe as well. I was there for the first six hour meditation for lay devotees after it opened, many years ago. I feel for all the people affected by the fire in the entire Pacific Palisades region. As an east coast devotee, this the only SRF sacred site I have been blessed to visit in person.

Brother Bimalananda stood on the grounds of the Hidden Valley Retreat and "Aum'd" for many hours with upraised hands. The fire came close, but did not reach the retreat. We can all visualize that same impenetratable protection around our beloved Lake Shrine and the adjoining neighborhood.

We love you and we are praying for the safety of beloved Lake Shrine. We are in Ohio now but lived in Los Angeles for 20 years. Lake Shrine was one of the very first places we visited in the area, and we spent many happy and peaceful hours there. Master has been my gutu for decades. Holding you in our hearts. Blessings!
