We are pleased to share the good news that the site in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, where Paramahansa Yogananda was born on January 5, 1893 (as depicted in his Autobiography of a Yogi) is now being developed into a sacred pilgrimage destination for visitors from around the globe.
On Sunday, May 11, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for a memorial shrine honoring Paramahansa Yogananda. The Honorable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Sri Yogi Adityanath, presided over the event, joined by Brother Vishwananda, Vice-President of Self-Realization Fellowship and member of the SRF/YSS Board of Directors, along with YSS General Secretary and Board member Swami Ishwarananda and YSS Board member Swami Chaitanyananda. Around 600 people attended the ceremony, including local Gorakhpur dignitaries, members of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS), and friends and admirers of Paramahansaji’s spiritual legacy from around the world.
For several years, Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (the name by which Paramahansaji’s work is known in India and neighboring countries) has actively sought to acquire the property; however, factors beyond YSS’s control delayed the fulfilment of this long-cherished goal. It was only recently, through the support and guidance of Sri Yogi Adityanath, that the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department was able to successfully overcome the longstanding challenges and complete the acquisition.
In collaboration with YSS, a plan has been developed to construct a beautiful memorial shrine that will feature a room dedicated to Paramahansa Yogananda, a museum, and a meditation hall. It will be open to devotees and friends of our beloved Guru who would like to come to pay their respects, and meditate at this holy site.
Envisioned as a place of pilgrimage, the shrine will honor the birth, life, and spiritual mission of the great guru who brought the Kriya Yoga teachings and India’s perennial science of meditation to the world, and is revered as a Premavatar, an incarnation of divine love.
The shrine will be built on the exact spot as the house of Paramahansa Yogananda’s birth. Although the original building had to be demolished due to severe deterioration, the new shrine will incorporate bricks from the original structure, preserving the sacred vibrations of this unique birthplace.
Construction is set to begin immediately, with the project expected to be completed in approximately eighteen months.

This is very exciting news! I have been to many of Master's pilgrimage places in India, but not his birthplace. I hope to visit this sacred shrine once it is constructed.
Guruji birth place Gorakhpur, I was posted first in my Military job tenure 1979-81. It was so fortunate, that in October 1983, I became YSS Lesson member. And regularly follow Guruji teaching, along with meditation. I am very glad - to see this link on Guruji birth site developed very nice, it's wonderful. I will visit this place, it will be my memory after 40+ years of stay in Gorakhpur. Thanks SRF/YSS for this sure development. Many devotees will feel to visit Gorakhpur. Jai Guru
