Our dear Brother Nikhilananda passed away serenely on Sunday, October 11, 2026, after devotedly serving in the SRF ashrams as a Self-Realization Fellowship monk for more than forty years.
Brother Nikhilananda, whose name means “Bliss through awareness of completeness,” served in many areas of the SRF work. He will be especially remembered by SRF members around the world for his decades of gentle and compassionate encouragement during his service at SRF temples, centers, and spiritual retreats, and in individual counsel.
A private monastic memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 5. A public memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the SRF San Diego Temple. After these services, a fuller account of Brother Nikhilananda’s life will be added to this post.

In early August, 2023, I visited Hidden Valley Ashram to seek counselling after my wife passed away couple of months ago. It was Brother Nikhilananda who met me and spent more than an hour and gave me all comfort with his soothing guidance, kindness and wise counsel. It was such a nice experience. The sudden message that Brother left his body serenely on 11th October came as a shock. Blessed soul. Cannot forget that beautiful meeting and his pleasant smile. God and Guru bless his soul.
I thank the revered brother for his love and service from the core of my heart. I pray the Heavenly Father to extend His deep love to the brother and grant him liberation.
I especially remember a counselling session you gave the members of the Vienna meditation circle, during a difficult time. I don´t remember exactly what it was about or what you said, but I remember, that we were all so impressed by your deep humility and that your wise and loving - yet at the same time so powerful - words inspired us so deeply. And the countless stories you shared so freely with us and your simple, yet profound way of explaining spiritual truths through them with your childlike joy and enthusiasm. What a role model awakening God´s love in all true hearts. THANK YOU.
I never met him personally, but this notice struck me like losing a dear friend. I believe this is because these holy people pray for us a lot. Then the soul knows someone that loved you now is gone.

The message of Brother Nikhilanandji’s passing deeply saddened all of us. We know that Brother’s soul now enjoys happily its free state. However, we’ll miss him so much. Over decades he supported us with his wise and considerate counceling. We’ll also keep many treasured moments with Brother Nikhilananda when we went up the mountains with him and one of the monks who accompanied him. There was always time for meditation in nature, for the joy of spiritual companionship and even for personal counceling.

Our dear monastics all have special memorable qualities. For Brother Nikhilananda, I was completely struck by the peaceful eyes. I wanted that deep peace.
I don't know what got into me and I was asking him for all sorts of spiritual guidance. But he was very patient and helpful. Same calm and loving patience was present when he was making a joke with the attendees, and when he was dealing with a challenging child.
He will be missed. I'm so grateful for these wonderful examples of Master's teachings. Jai Guru!

Brother Nikhilanandaji graciously joined a fellowship meeting for young adults on the topic of "Devotion". As we went around the circle to give a personal definition in just a word or two, Brotherji's turn came. His response was... "Dark Chocolate." The meeting continued on, and later someone asked, "Brother, why 'Dark Chocolate'?" Brother's response: "75%"

Dear Nikhlanandaji was a dream team together with the former Br. Simone, now Tyagananda in guiding the development of Meditation Circles and groups with patience and love - one of them was our Munich Center. While living as an extended retreatant at Hidden Valley. I was going through a particularly rough week at the time, I remember feeling down. During a work break, I recall sitting outside somewhere, staring off into space. Brother seemed to pop out of nowhere and had a long chat with me, and uplifted my spirits. That sweet gesture did so much for me and the rest of my time living at the ashram, not sure if he realized how much it helped me. With a lifetime of sweet seva behind him, surely the great ones have a special spot ready for him in the higher realms. Blissful journeys, brother.
on behalf of the SRF Athens Meditation Circle, we offer our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences on the passing of our beloved Brother Nikhilananda on Sunday.
May his soul rest in the infinite peace and divine love of our Heavenly Father and beloved Guru.
We are deeply grateful for his spiritual guidance, kindness, and loving presence in our spiritual family. Though he has left this earthly plane, his light and the inspiration he shared will remain in our hearts.

Dear Brother Nikhilananda, I am so glad that I had the chance to meet you in person last year during a retreat in Huissen, Netherlands. I will always remember your warm, uplifting and inspiring personality. The retreat with you and Brother Bhimananda was such a blessing! I specifically remember how much you loved the sound of the church bells on the Sunday morning. Ever since then, whenever I hear the bells, they remind me of you, and they will do so even more now that you have passed away. With deep prayers and Love!

Brother Nikhilananda always radiated calmness, love, empathy, love, wisdom, humility and practicality. He was never rushed, always had time for you. He will be missed by us but we are glad for his transition to another sphere.

Add'l post.: about 8-10 years ago we met at a Convocation. He gave me a hug, and I almost keeled over with bliss. After that, I always remembered that the sound "keel" is in his name.
I'm a bit surprised. Thought he'd live longer. But God's will be done.
I took over his job my first day at the Leucadia Greenhouse part of Hidden Valley Ashram in early 1984. It was spraying basil plants. He entered the postulant ashram the very next day.
Then I knew him years more as Br. James running the Hidden Valley kitchen.
He resembled Brother Premamoy quite a lot.
What a sweet soul. He is probably with Sri Yukteswarji in Hiranyaloka now.
I will treasure the sweet fellowship we had . What a humble sweet soul.
Deepest prayers and gratitude for Brother Nikhilananda's life of dedication and devotion. Thank you for more than forty years of gentle, compassionate service to so many. May he rest in God's eternal light and joy.

I will miss Brother Nikhilananda. We served together for a year as lay devotees at Hidden Valley Ashram back in the early 1980's We were next door neighbors. I remember his quiet, deep, spiritual nature. It has been a joy to continue to see him over the years. These last few were a treasure with him speaking at San Diego Tempe. His talks were filled with the deep spirituality he always embodied; and the Divine Love he emanated was palpable. Godspeed Brother, and may you be in ecstasy with Our Beloved and the Masters.

The news of Brother Nikhilananda’s passing came unexpectedly. I fondly remember a good conversation with him about our meditation circle during the monks’ visit to Germany last year. It was a source of fresh encouragement and the reassuring feeling that we had someone we could turn to whenever we needed guidance or support.
And now, suddenly, he is no longer with us, reminding us once again of the impermanence of this world and of the true purpose of our lives.
May Brother now enjoy peace and bliss in the loving embrace of God and Guru.
We have such fond memories of Btotherji as our co-minister at Glendale Temple. He was always smiling, gentle of manner and an inspiration to us. We’ll never forget his anecdotes, particularly about “Joe the Rock” when he was assigned to Hidden Valley Ashram. Master bless you, Brother.

I remember meditating alone in the old barn chapel at Hidden Valley on a cold evening. I was cold. He wrapped a woolen blanket around my shoulders. When I mentioned it to him years later he had forgotten about it. But I never did.
For me I will always remember him as a fierce fellow ping pong player when we were both Hidden Valley residents before his monastic life!

Dear Brother Nikhilananda will always be remembered for his quiet composure, loving attention, and enthusiasm for our little chapel in The Hague/Wassenaar in The Netherlands. In June of 2017 he was one of the monks who inaugurated our chapel. He was always enquiring after the group and especially fond of our temple cat, Mix.

I keep as a treasured memory my visit to you at Escondido Ashram in September 2025, where you gifted me with a long hour of your personal time and council. Your unexpected call late this Spring 2026, "just to chat a bit" will remain a treasured gift. Parting as we always did " I will keep you in my prayers and you keep me in yours"
