Position Summary

  • Prepares and cooks main dishes, vegetables and other side dishes for monastics.
  • Cross training in all other Central Kitchen positions.
  • Cleans the areas of the Central Kitchen and Dining Room as needed.
  • Other position related tasks, as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Unpack, wash, chop and portion raw goods for meal preparation.
  • Follow recipes consistently when cooking main dish, vegetables and side dishes for monastics.
  • Wash, dry and put away all pots, pans and dishes generated by their work.
  • Clean Central Kitchen and Dining Room, including sweeping and mopping floor.
  • Cross training for all positions in the Central Kitchen, in order to serve as backup during vacations, illness and staff transitions.
  • Determine the usage of leftovers, including separating, storing and the process for reuse or discard.
  • Assisting as needed for multiple special events.
  • Responsible to follow SRF’s policies and established processes.
  • Other position related tasks, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Physical stamina, including the ability to lift up to 25 pounds, work a full shift on one’s feet and maintain physical activity throughout the course of each shift.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • A background in food service and/or food preparation as well as knowledge of vegetarian cooking.
  • Creativity and experience in preparing and presenting a wide variety of foods from small, household-quantity portions to large commercial quantities.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and safely with others in a restricted workspace.
  • Ability to work within deadlines and time constraints.
  • Ability to respond professionally and appropriately to continual changes and unforeseen challenges as they occur.
  • ServSafe Food Handling Certificate preferred, refresher course every 3 years.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a manner that meets SRF standards.
  • Fluent in the English language.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to function well in a multi-task environment.
  • Ability to maintain a strict level of confidentiality.
  • Highest level of respect for our monastic community, as we work closely with them.
  • High school graduate preferred and/or the equivalent skills.

Additional Details:

This is a 40 hour per week Monday through Friday position.

Local candidates only. No reimbursement for relocation cost offered for this position.
